Description

Mercedes Painting II Final
Oil on canvas, 18X24, about 24 hours of actual work

Assignment for Painting II. Our Professor wanted to work more on edges. This was difficult for me to do because i wanted to paint in the details much more clearly. The wire rims really broke my heart. Put a lot of work into them and then had to smudge them up and blend them together. Same thing with the vents on the side of the hood. The ONLY place that i was allowed to have clean edges was in the back of the headlamp assembly...as that is where my focus was.

The idea was to have the car with blended edges except where you manipulate the viewer’s eyes to focus on one part of the painting. And it certainly is a technique that has its place. But i don’t think that is what car guys, or car girls, want. We want to see the details of the car, which we regard as a work of art in itself! At least, that’s what THIS car guy thinks.

Okay. That’s what the Professor wanted, that’s what he got, and i received an A in the class. But i still want to paint this again my way! Less blurring of edges! And i need to add some depth to the background so that it extends beyond the front of the car at the top third of the painting. And tone down that steering wheel...what was i thinking there?

This is from my photograph of a 1935 Mercedes Benz 500K, posted here earlier on DA [link] .
