Devon Rutherford
Graphite pencils on 14X17 Strathmore Bristol 400 Series 2 Ply Paper, about 7.5 hours.

The sheet of paper was 14X17, but i made the drawing smaller, about 9X11 as presented here, so that it would fit into a standard mat opening.

I still have proportional issues, but i was able to get closer with this drawing than i did with the warm up i continue to improve in that area.
His hair is too stiff. This is particularly frustrating as his hoodie looks really nice and soft. In particular, his beard around his chin appears too forced and contrived...not natural.
On the hoodie i elected to only faintly suggest the zipper, as i did not want the viewer’s eye to be pulled down there.
I was not at all happy with the paper as it curled when i sprayed the final drawing with fixative. One of the reasons i like the Fabriano Artistico, 140 LB Hot Press Watercolor Paper is that it is on a block, and so it does not go and curl like that.
Overall, i am content with this effort as it is my first portrait drawing in years. I think i got a good return on my seven and a half hour investment. However, i still have a long way to go yet.

Here are two warm up sketches.……
Here is the reference photograph.…

Next up is another portrait.

I think this is stunning work! I am going to critique your critique... Who is this model? Is it from an image or live? As a viewer, without having seen your reference, this looks to be in good proportion. I also like the stiff hair, especially next to the soft hood. It provides great contrast as it doesn't blend together this way. I am not a master at human realisim, but I prefer portraits that have a little unnatural appearance. It gives an effect of fantasy and creativity that I love. I agree with your zipper decision, however adding alittle tiny bit more texture there would have been nice. Overall, I LOVE this artwork! It makes me feel happy and when i look into the eyes of the man, it makes me smile. His eyes are smiling with his mouth, and that my fellow artist, is very hard to do... which leads me to believe that you are a master at this :)

Thank you for the kind words.
The model is a friend of mine that i shot just before he moved halfway across the country (from St. Louis to California).
I have very exacting standards. One of Devon's outstanding physical features is his long soft hair. I was bummed that i did not capture it correctly.
And yes, Devon is always smiling! At least i got that right!
Thank you for the time you took in writing a detailed critique. :D

Beautiful drawing. It has lot of contrast which is a good thing. I can't give you any new critique since you pointed out the flaws yourself. I'm sure with lots of practise you will be able to draw hair and proportions better :3.
