Description

1961 Chevrolet Corvair Rampside Graphite
Graphite pencils on 12X18 Fabriano Artistico, 140 LB Hot Press Watercolor Paper, 27 hours even.

The sheet of paper was 12X18, but i made the drawing smaller so that it would fit into a standard mat opening of 11X14 as presented here.

My challenge in this piece was to present the personality of the Corvair faithfully and convincingly even though the front of the vehicle is in shadow. While one never wants to be a slave to their reference photograph and draw shadows as dark as they appear in prints, i pushed the values even further here from the get go.

And when finished i went back and fuzzed the front wheel. Which i was loath to do, as i really love chromed wheels! But when looking at the drawing, the contrast of that wheel kept diverting my eye...the wheel became the focal point...and i wanted the focal point to be on the front of the car.

Also, there is a reflection of grass along the lowest side and down along the turn of the pan from behind the bumper to the front wheel well. I left them out too as i found it distracting. Again...my intention is not to replicate a photograph...my intention is to render the vehicle so that the personality of that individual piece is visually and artistically presented.

Once again, the original looks better than this, smoother, but i am getting better at presenting my work thanks to some photography tips from Nancy’s oldest daughter from a previous marriage, Tara. She’s an architectural photographer that also does catalog shots of artwork, and she helped me a lot the last time she was in town!

Here is the reference photograph that i used [link] .
