1958 Ford F250 In Oil
Oil paint on gessoed board, 9X12, 144 hours
I am fairly pleased with this painting. It looks nice. I think my proportions are okay. I am happy with my palette choices, and i have a full range of values here. I was also happy with the way the background turned out. I originally shot this pickup truck in a parking lot at a car show, and wanted to paint it in front of a barn to put it in a rural setting. It came out okay.
My biggest complaint is the time it took. I started this painting for the Ashley Ames Art Auction. After she died the wind kind’a went out of my sails for a while there. But i had really hoped that a 9X12 painting would not take near as long as 144 hours.
Spent a lot of time mixing paint. I used a limited palette of five colors in this, Ultramarine Blue, Rose Madder, Yellow (Holbein’s version of a cadmium yellow medium), Ivory Black and Titanium White.
My second problem with this was trying to paint the details. It was very difficult, even with 000 sized brushes.
And there are still things i need to shore up in my paintings. Still plenty of room to learn and improve.

Vision Originality Technique ImpactLet me start with this comment. Most vehiclular art I see here of a more traditional nature comes from people who are developing technique and usually very young individuals, or the work is good but tends not to be of subjects that really interest me, or the work is legitimate professional work, which until now I've only see maybe than half a dozen top-notch people that come readily to mind on DA that do automotive art.
This could have worked as a period advertisement for Ford and reminds me of ads I've seen like those in period. It's quality and has that pro-level commercial feel to it. Solid composition, complimentary choices of colors in the background to set the truck off nicely, the evocation of a nice sunny day in the rural US, it all works. The other thing I really like about this is the truck looks right and doesn't appear to be misshapen or misporportioned. Much of what I see from the "beginners" here is. Ths reflections on the truck also work. Not too glinty or bright, but paint in that era wasn't, and this is a work vehicle, not a show car.
I hope I was able to help you and to encourage you. I've seen a lot of lesser stuff of this genre on DA, and in my personal point of view, yours ranks with the "real" automotive artists here, and it also has your personal touch to it and is different from the others I also respect in every good way possible. I hope you'll share more of your work here and I look forward to seeing more.
