1951 Studebaker Pickup Graphite
Graphite pencils on 12X18 Fabriano Artistico, 140 LB Hot Press Watercolor Paper, 40 hours

The sheet of paper was 12X18, but i made the drawing smaller so that it would fit into a standard mat opening of 11X14 as presented here.

This is for :iconblurwing:, it is his truck, drawn from a reference photograph that he sent to me last year. He has waited a long time for me to get this done. I have not been very prolific at all.

This is the graphite part, the establishment of the values...and so they are rather soft and not too much definition. They will darken up and become better defined when i go over this with acrylic glazes. The truck has a beautiful custom paint job of yellow and turquoise, with a magenta stripe.

In the photograph, the truck stands in front of a building, and this building is reflected on the hood and around the side. I elected to take this reflection out to show sweeping clouds on the hood and a tree line on the side.

I am not sure about the license plate. It looks better in person, but the value of the plate is messed up some. The shadow under the front of the truck also looks much better in person.

I am still learning and growing...but this is a good effort. It was hard to build up any momentum due to some physical restraints i had. But i ended up with a good drawing on the paper.

Here is the reference photograph that i used [link] .

Great work! Watch your shadow...you want that REALLY HARD and not soft (now you are hearing the illustrator in me speak lol) Also the roofline, get some french curves if you don't have any. This though is honestly exceptional...dang nice

I see what you were saying about lines fading as they get farther away, suck as the ones one the hood and the one that goes down from the headlight to the door. I don't like where from the door back you dont have edges with lines, just shading. That's purely my prefrence, I like things to stand out and be well defined. I did like you did when I did my first one. I was so amazed that every shadow made it look a certian way and added depth. My friends said it looked a little blurry becuase I didn't have edges. lol. I really like the rim on the front. A little goes a long way. You didn't have to work very hard at it to make it well defined and not confusing in its structure. All in all it is a great piece, I will try to step out of my comfort zone and maybe I might like it out there. :)

Thank you. And yes, staying in our comfort zones do not help us grow much. I am trying very hard to leave things toward the back undefined because i want to manipulate the way people look at my subject. So i do more definition in the front. And, some people like that and some do not...it's a judgment call we each have to make.

Thank you! Advice? Keep drawing! Try to take your time to really look at what you are drawing. Slow down some and be more patient. If portraiture is what you are after, there is a very good book out there that helped me a lot to learn how to see what i was looking at when trying to draw. It focuses on portraits, but the fundamentals work in everything we try to capture in two dimensions. It's "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain," by Betty Edwards. [link] I had number six on this list, but they are all good. I highly recommend this book, but what ever you do, just keep drawing. You have the talent, you just need to take the time to work on it.

Thanks a lot for the advice :)
I'll be sure to keep practicing and slow down for some things since now its much faster to do a portrait. But yeah. I"m pretty sure I've heard of the book before, but I'll definitely check it out.

A gorgeous black and white piece. I do love the varying shades and the reflections :) And, of course, the truck itself!
