1951 Studebaker Pickup Acrylic
Acrylic paint glazed over graphite pencils on 12X18 Fabriano Artistico, 140 LB Hot Press Watercolor Paper, 60 hours

The sheet of paper was 12X18, but i made the drawing smaller so that it would fit into a standard mat opening of 11X14 as presented here.

Have entered this piece in :iconpencil-box: 2 contest, as it has two mediums mixed together. [link]

The sheet of paper was 12X18, but i made the drawing smaller so that it would fit into a standard mat opening of 11X14 as presented here.

I am guessing 60 hours total on this. Another 30 hours or more were spent floating acrylic washes over graphite patterns i drew just to see how it would work.

This was for :iconblurwing:, it is his truck, drawn from a reference photograph that he sent to me last year. He waited a long time for me to get this done, and unfortunately it did not turn out very well.

As a painting of a truck goes, it is okay. However, the colors do not match the reference photograph. In other words, the painting does not match the colors of the client’s truck. So the craftsmanship is here, but the artistic part, the capturing the essence of the truck, was lost.

This was an attempt to try to mix graphite with acrylic layers. I did not do it very well. Maybe this is why acrylic used as watercolor over graphite is not a common technique. Or maybe it means i just do not know how to do it very well.

I am still learning and growing...but this was a good effort. I am not sure when i will try this method again, but i am glad i at least pushed my comfort zone and gave it a shot.

Here is the reference photograph that i used [link] .

It looks great! I love your idea of drawing a with a pencil and then painting over it. The effects are really good. I love the colors of the truck. I suppose they weren't original but the owner painted it this way. Anyway, great job. Keep it up :)

I`m sorry it didn`t work out just as you planned but I must say it is impressive nonetheles. I wish it had more contrast in it, and the rear wheel looks odd, and understandable because it`s your first try at a new technique. I have to add that I have no experience in painting, the only reason I don`t like it is because I get really messy, and hate that. I preffer having ink on my hands than splats on my t-shirts, and eventually everything ele in the house.

Good for you! Trying new things is always daring. You say you aren't happy with it but I can tell you this...You learned a lot and that is always a good thing. I like it personally but I know how it feels when what's in your head doesn't make it to the paper. Nice work.:)

Actually I think you under estimate it as a picture of a truck. It's actually pretty good. Even comparing it to the real thing still puts it in a favourable light. I see some inconsistencies in the shadows and highlight, some flattening of the color, and some funky hue issues with the pencil shaded areas. Somewhere I once read that graphite pencils had a habit of appearing somewhat green next to a black color pencil. You may try this again using a charcoal pencil rather than a graphite one. (waxy color pencils would probably cause adhesion issues)

Overall, were I the customer, I would be pleased....

Thank you very much! Ya know...you might have something there with using charcoal for the values instead of graphite!

Yeah, when I first read that about graphite looking green I didn't believe it until I tried shading over color pencil with it. At least with charcoal you're not dealing with the binders and other additives. Oooh, you might try those water color pencils (Aquarell are pretty good) too...
