Assignment for Illustration I. Come up with an illustration for homelessness to enter St. Louis Post Dispatch 100 Neediest Cases promotion. The paper prints up the 100 Neediest Cases and illustrates it with art work selected from entries by students. Mine was picked and printed in the paper on the eleventh day. You get a certificate to put in your portfolio.
I learned that when a newspaper takes your art work, shrinks it down to almost a three inch square, then floods the blacks with cheap soy ink on newsprint, that all this turns your hard work into a smudge. But it looked okay on their website for a while.
I did not want to do a scratchboard as i have never done one before. My Professor said i had shown plenty of skill on the pen and ink with “The Bee & Jupiter,” and should stretch myself with this. So i did. Since i was the model, a number of people from school knew who it was when they saw it in the paper. Said it was funny that i looked so sad...as i am a rather upbeat person most of the time.
